Gee for Genius

Gee is part of North London based camp Roots Ent. The 20 year old lyricist has come a long way since 2006 when he first picked up the mic.

"I first started freestyling when me and my friends would buy blank tapes and record ourselves rhyming over instrumentals. I realised I had the ability to write poignant lyrics and bring and put it to music. I enjoyed the process of constructing a verse, a hook and bringing it to life in the booth."

Gee's lyrics are catchy yet intelligent, he captures the essence of hip hop in every bar. He describes his music as "consious and influential" and he wishes to use his music to change peoples perceptions and evoke positive change, he states:

"I hope my music can reach out to the masses and with determination and hard work I would like to have a positive impact, and for people to feel it and understand me as a person. I hope I can change the mindset of the youths and so by them listening to my music they might just think more positively. "

The rise in gun and knife violence in the Uk in recent years has contributed to giving the hip hop industry a bad name. Young talented artists such as Gee have the ability and fortitude to infiltrate the young and give them a reason to look to a positive future.

Gee told us:

"There are a lot of artists that promote violence in their rhymes , the youths look up to them and feel influenced by what they are saying. What a lot of artists are not doing is taking something negative and creating something positive. I hope I can be part of a generation of change. As I see my music as being a vehicle by which I can express my views and try to make a difference in a negative society. "

Gee believes in hard work and determination, this has seen him over the past two years perfect and polish his songwriting and lyrical skills. His musical influences range from Bob Marley to Tupac and Michael Jackson. He is currently working on his debut mixtape which will be appropriately titled "positive state of mind" The self penned release will be packed full of hard hitting songs that depict as he stated "Society, the system, the way things are and young ghetto youths living in urban societies and the struggles we face"

Gee is 20 years old but seems wise beyond his years, wishing to work with artists such as John Legend, he believes he has the potential to compete with both US and UK artists.

He is currently working with London based underground producers, we can expect his mixtape to be released in February and we anticipate many more exciting things to follow from this up and coming UK talent.
